Health Insurance Cost Calculator
Use this free calculator to estimate your monthly health insurance premium based on your age, location, plan tier, and coverage type. Our estimates are based on national and state-level average data from the ACA marketplace and employer-sponsored plans.
How This Calculator Works
This calculator uses average premium data from the ACA marketplace and adjusts based on several factors:
- Age adjustment: Under ACA rules, insurers can charge older adults up to 3x more than younger adults. Our calculator applies age-based adjustments using the standard ACA age curve.
- State adjustment: Premiums vary significantly by state. We group states into cost ranges based on average marketplace premiums.
- Metal tier: Higher tiers (Gold, Platinum) have higher premiums but lower out-of-pocket costs. Lower tiers (Bronze) have lower premiums but higher deductibles.
- Coverage type: Adding a spouse approximately doubles the premium. Family coverage adds approximately 2.5x to 2.8x the individual premium.
- Tobacco use: Insurers can charge tobacco users up to 50% more than non-users in most states.
What to Do After Getting Your Estimate
- Check if you qualify for subsidies — Visit HealthCare.gov to see if you qualify for premium tax credits that can significantly reduce your actual cost.
- Compare actual plans — Our estimate gives you a ballpark figure. Actual plans in your area may be higher or lower.
- Consider total costs — A plan's premium is just one part of the cost. Factor in the deductible, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum.
- Check provider networks — Make sure your preferred doctors and hospitals are in the plan's network before enrolling.
